This guide will walk you through how to upgrade or downgrade your subscription if you find a plan that better fits your needs. You'll also learn how to pause or cancel your account if your business is closing temporarily or permanently.
To help you decide on the right plan, visit our subscriptions page or schedule a time to speak with one of our experts.
Only the site owner can manage a site’s subscription. This prevents unauthorised users from making account changes.

Frequently asked questions
Upgrading, downgrading, or pausing your subscription
Upgrade: As your business grows, Lightspeed has a range of flexible plans that scale with you. Upgrade to access more features across POS and add-ons such as Insights.
Downgrade: Downgrading is different from cancelling. Cancelling means you no longer need our service, while downgrading means that you still want to stay with us but just change to a plan that best suits your needs.
Pause: The Pause plan option allows you to temporarily pause your current subscription for a very small monthly fee ($5/mo). This plan is best for businesses that are closing temporarily. Changing your subscription to the Pause plan will keep your data and configurations intact. However, it will restrict your ability to make sales.
Whether you are upgrading, downgrading, or pausing, you will find all these options on the Subscriptions page.
To change your subscription:
- Log in to Back Office.
- Go to Home → Subscriptions.
- If you have multiple sites, choose the site you want to manage.
- Select Change plan.
- Choose your POS plan (Step 1).
- Select your add-ons (Step 2).
- Review all changes on Step 3 and select Confirm.
After you confirm, the changes are applied immediately and you’ll see a success message. You must have a valid payment method on file to confirm a plan or add-on change. If no payment method is available, you’ll see a message prompting you to add one before continuing.
Changing your add-ons only
If you want to update only your add-on subscriptions (for example, Insights, Purchase, Produce), you can skip the POS plan step.
To change add-ons only:
- Log in to Back Office.
- Go to Home → Subscriptions.
- Select Change add-on plans.
- Step 2 will open directly, allowing you to add or remove eligible add-ons.
- Review and confirm the changes on Step 3.
Entering via Change add-on plans skips Step 1 entirely and keeps your current POS plan.
Cancelling subscription
Cancelling your subscription moves your site to the $0 Lite plan, which is limited to 10 sales per day. If you’re only closing temporarily, consider the Pause plan instead.
The Pause plan lets you temporarily stop using Lightspeed while keeping all your data and settings intact. POS sales are disabled while paused, but you can reactivate at any time. The Pause plan costs $5/month.
To cancel your subscription:
- Log in to Back Office.
- Go to Home → Subscriptions.
- If you have multiple sites, choose the site you want to cancel the subscription of.
- Select Cancel site subscription.
- A chat window will open to guide you through the cancellation steps.
If you have multiple sites, you’ll need to cancel each site separately.
Frequently asked questions
If you upgrade mid-cycle, you’ll be charged a prorated amount immediately. Then, at your next billing date, you’ll pay the full amount for the upcoming month. Lightspeed Restaurant bills in advance, so you won’t receive a refund if you downgrade during an active billing cycle.
Only the Site owner, Admins, or users with the View billing invoices permission can access invoices. If you have the correct access, you can find them in the Invoices section in Back Office.
This message appears when your site is on an older pricing structure that we no longer offer to new customers. You can keep using your legacy plan, but if you select Change plan, you’ll need to move to one of our current POS plans and won’t be able to switch back. If you only want to update your add-ons, choose Change add-on plans instead.
