Tips or gratuities, allow customers to show appreciation and reward your staff by adding a small extra amount to their payment processed via Lightspeed Payments.
This guide will cover everything from enabling tipping and updating your terminal to accepting tips during checkout and viewing tip reports.
For setups using third-party payment integrations, tips can be entered manually through the POS using the native tipping feature.

Setting up tipping
To start accepting tips, you'll need to enable the Tipping feature in Back Office and update your payment terminal configuration. Complete the setup by following the steps below.
Enabling tipping in Back Office
Users with admin permission can enable Tipping. If you don’t have admin access, an admin user will need to grant you the Manage Lightspeed Payments permission before you can make any changes.
To enable tipping:
- Log in to Back Office with your Lightspeed credentials.
- In the navigation menu, select Integrations.
- Search for and select Lightspeed Payments.
- Under the Settings tab, enable Tipping by switching the toggle on.
- Manually sync the POS or sync your registers from Back Office.
Updating the payment terminal configuration
Whenever you make changes to your Lightspeed Payments settings, such as enabling Tipping, you'll need to manually update the configuration of your payment terminal to ensure the changes take effect immediately.
Smart Terminals (with/without) Printer
To update the payment terminal configuration:
- On the terminal touchscreen, tap Settings.
- Tap Config.
- Enter the admin PIN: 5773.
- Tap Update. The terminal will automatically restart and update its settings. This process may take several minutes.
Verifone e285, V400m, and P400+
To update the payment terminal configuration:
- Press the 9 key, followed by the Confirm key (green circle) on the terminal's number pad.
- Enter the admin PIN: 5773.
- Tap Config.
- Tap Update. The terminal will automatically restart and update its settings. This process may take several minutes.
Processing a sale with a tip
Once tipping is enabled, the option will appear on the payment terminal during the checkout process. Here's how to accept a tip when completing a sale.
To process a sale with a tip:
- Process the order as usual on the POS.
- Click Checkout.
- Select Lightspeed Payments.
On the terminal, customers can choose to tip 5%, 10%, 15%, enter a custom amount, or opt to skip.
Accessing tip reports
Tip totals from transactions are available in your Lightspeed Payments reports. You can filter the report by date to view tip data for a specific time period.
