Need flexibility in entering quantities and prices at the POS, such as an Open Food or Open Drink product? Now you can set specific products to automatically ask you to enter a quantity or price.
Variable Quantity Prompt is useful for regularly selling a product by weight amount or other multiples:
- Selling almonds by ounces
- Selling coffee beans by kilogram
- Selling Deli meats by the kilogram or gram
- Selling tickets
- Catering for __ number of people
- Hiring out ______ for ___ many people
Variable Price Prompt is useful for selling products that are constantly changing their price:
- Market Day pricing for menu items
- Pricing for the roast of the day
- Open food or open beverage - custom pricing on the fly
Variable Quantity and Variable Price Prompts can be activated separately or you can have both!
Note - These prompts appear automatically at the Point-of-Sale.

Set up Variable Quantity Prompt
If you do NOT regularly sell products in variable quantities and only need it for one-off sales, we can edit a quantity from the product edit screen on the POS.
If you are selling products that are regularly sold in variable quantities, follow the steps below to activate the prompt:
1. Under Products from the Kounta Back Office, select the cog icon beside the product you want to edit
2. From the Product Info page, set the Variable Quantity Prompt to Yes
3. Select Save

Before being able to use this prompt on the POS, it must be set up in the Back Office.
1. On the Point-of-Sale, select the product as normal
2. This prompt will appear. Enter the quantity (decimal points will count!)
3. This change will register on the order summary:
Set up Variable Price Prompt / Open Product
If you do NOT regularly sell products in variable prices and only need it for one-off sales, we can edit a price from the product edit screen on the POS
If you are selling products that are regularly sold in variable prices, follow the steps below to activate the prompt:
1. Under Products from the Back Office, select the cog icon beside the product you want to edit
2. Set the Variable Price Prompt to Yes
3. Enter the price range using the Min Sell Price and Max Sell Price fields
4. Select Save

Now that you have activated the prompt, here is how you will use it at the Point-of-Sale:
1. On the Point-of-Sale, select the product as normal
2. You will now be prompted to enter the price.
3. This change will register on the order summary:

If you need to change the change the value you entered for the Variable Quantity or Price prompt, here’s how:
1. Select the product from the order summary
2. On the edit screen, you can now see the options of Quantity and Unit Price fields
3. Edit these values accordingly
4. Select Apply Changes
Pro - Tip: You can edit the price and quantity of a product from here even if they do not have the Variable Quantity or Variable Price Prompt enabled. However, you will need the Change Price permission for editing a price like this.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change order price and quantity even without an automatic prompt?
Yes, you can. Products without the automatic prompt for Variable Quantity or Variable Price Prompt enabled can still be edited as a normal product.
Does changing the quantity and price require additional staff permissions?
No
