Common uses for Option Sets
Option sets are designed to enhance flexibility and control in your ordering process. Common uses for Option Sets include:
- Asking key questions: Prompt staff to ask important questions like how the steak should be cooked or whether the customer prefers chips and salad or vegetables and mash.
- Upselling: Remind staff to offer upsells, especially those you're focusing on this month.
- Combo meals: Build combo deals or banquet-style meals with selectable options for each course, side, or drink.

Setting up Option Sets
Option Sets let you create customizable menu choices, such as sizes, preparation methods, or add-ons. This section will guide you through enabling and setting up Option Sets for use with your menu items.
Enabling Option Sets
Before creating an Option set, you'll ned to enable the feature in Back office. Once enabled, you'll be able to create and customize menu items into flexible options.
To enable Option Sets:
- Log in to Back Office with your Lightspeed credentials.
- In the navigation menu, click Features.
- Search for and select Option Sets.
- Click Enable.
Setting up an Option Set
Once enabled, you're ready to create your Option Sets. This includes naming the options and configuring the option settings.
To create an Option Set:
- From the navigation menu, select Products > Option Sets.
-
Click Create > Create Option Set.
- Enter a name for your Option Set.
- Click Create.
-
Add your options. These can be modifiers, products, or both.
- Price ($): Each option can have a unique price, which will only apply when used in this Option set. This won't affect the option's default price elsewhere.
- Tax: Select the applicable tax setting for each option.
-
Click the plus (+) icon on the right to add an option to your Option set.
-
For more settings, navigate to the Rules tab and configure the following options:
- Minimum Selection: Set the minimum number of options that staff must select.
- Maximum Selection: Set the minimum number of options staff can select.
- Show Option Prefixes (No, Extra, Side, Only): Toggle to Yes if you'd like these instructions to appear with the options. This helps communicate detailed instructions to the kitchen.
The changes will be saved automatically. Once your Option Sets are ready, you can link them to your products or modifiers.
Linking an Option set to a product
After setting up your Option Sets, the next step is to link them to products. This ensures that customers and staff see the right options when placing orders.
To link an Option set to a product:
- In the same Option Sets screen, select Link to Products.
-
Use the search bar to find the product or category you want to link the Option Sets to. Here, you will see the options:
- Linked Option Sets: Enter the name of the Option Set you want to link.
- Auto-Prompt on POS: This setting controls whether the Option Set appears automatically when a product is selected on the POS.
- Yes: Enable this if you want the Option Set to appear automatically during the ordering process on the POS.
- No: Disable this if the Option set is optional. This is ideal for ingredient modifications that aren't required for every order.
Non-prompted Option Sets can be accessed from the product's edit screen by selecting the product from the order summary panel on POS.
