Tap to Pay on iPhone with Lightspeed Payments

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, Lightspeed Payments allows you to accept contactless payments, including contactless cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, directly on your iPhone without the need for additional hardware. It provides a secure and flexible way to complete transactions when your payment terminal is unavailable or your internet connectivity is down.

Tap to Pay requirements

Tap to Pay is only available on iPhones and isn't compatible with iPads. For this feature to function properly, ensure your device and account meet the following requirements: 

  • iPhone XS or higher
  • iOS 18.4 or later
  • Lightspeed Restaurant app version 3.11 or later
  • Active Lightspeed Payments account
  • 4-digit (or longer) passcode enabled on your iPhone
  • Valid Apple ID

Enabling Tap to Pay

Before you can start accepting contactless payments, Tap to Pay on iPhone must be enabled in the POS. This action can only be done by users with admin permission

To enable Tap to Pay on iPhone: 

  1. Navigate to your POS.
  2. Tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top left corner.
  3. Select Tap to Pay on iPhone

  4. A pop-up will appear with the Tap to Pay requirements on your iPhone. Tap Enable to continue.

  5. Enter your Apple ID.
  6. Tap Continue.

A green confirmation banner that says Tap To Pay on iPhone enabled will appear, confirming the feature is active and ready to use.

Processing a sale with Tap to Pay

Once Tap to Pay is enabled, you can start accepting contactless payments directly on your iPhone by having the customer tap their card or device when prompted during checkout. 

To process a Tap to Pay transaction with your iPhone: 

  1. Enter the order as usual in the POS.
  2. Tap Check Out.
  3. Select TAP TO PAY ON IPHONE.
  4. Have the customer tap their card or the contactless payment method to complete the payment.

Once the payment is successfully processed, the POS screen will show Transaction Successful.

Reporting with Tap to Pay

All transactions made through Tap to Pay are available in your Lightspeed Payments reports.

Tap to Pay on iPhone with Lightspeed Payments supports all major contactless payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets.

Is surcharging supported?

Yes, surcharging is supported. To set up surcharge rates, refer to our guide on surcharging with Lightspeed Payments

Why can’t I see Tap to Pay on iPhone in the left menu of my POS?

To see Tap to Pay on iPhone in your POS menu, ensure that you’re accessing the POS on a compatible iPhone that meets the required system specifications outlined in our Tap to Pay requirements.
