Before You Begin
To set up the Smartpay integration, you'll need:
- Your Smartpay payment terminals on hand.
- Smartpay enabled in Lightspeed's Back Office.
- A stable internet connection.
Enable Smartpay
- Go to the Integrations page in the Lightspeed Back Office.
- Select Smartpay and click Enable.
Pair Smartpay Terminal(s) with Lightspeed POS
- Go to the POS and click the menu button in the top-left corner, then select Add-ons.
- Click Pair Smartpay.
- For New Zealand based merchants, follow these pairing steps:
- For Australia based merchants, follow these pairing steps:
- Enter the pairing code displayed on your payment terminal and select Pair terminal.
Pro Tip: You can pair one Smartpay terminal to multiple registers! Contact Smartpay to set this up.
Process Sales with Smartpay on Lightspeed POS
When ready to process a payment, click the Smartpay logo during checkout.

For New Zealand customers, Smartpay offers the following terminals:
- S800: Fixed Ethernet Terminal
- S920: Mobile WiFi/4G Terminal
For Australian customers, Smartpay offers the following terminals:
- A920 Pro: Mobile WiFi/4G Terminal
- D210E: Mobile WiFi/3G Terminal
A transaction fee may apply for using the Smartpay integration with Lightspeed POS.
Smartpay terminals connect to Lightspeed via WiFi and Ethernet. Some terminals also support cellular connections via 3G/4G.
Use the Reconciliations Dashboard in Insights to report on payments. You can drill down by site, payment type, and trends over time.
New Zealand: Surcharges are displayed on the POS, receipts, and as 'Payment Surcharge' in reporting.
Australia: Surcharges are not displayed on the POS or within Lightspeed O-Series reporting.
Press Checkout → Smartpay again. The POS will retrieve the cached payment from the terminal.
Important: Don’t make any changes to the order in the POS.
This message means that the Smartpay terminal has processed a payment, but the POS did not receive or register it due to a communication or network error.
To fix this:
- Reopen the order showing the error.
- Select Checkout → Smartpay again to re-process the payment.
If the order was already closed using a manual payment method, ignore the message by pressing the Smartpay button in the checkout section again. This will allow you to proceed past the warning.
If you see the message below:
This indicates that a payment has already been marked as 'paid' in the terminal, but the sale was also closed using a different payment method in the POS. Your takings may be unbalanced at the end of the day.
To resolve this:
- Perform a money-in/money-out adjustment.
- Alternatively, be aware that there will be a matching out-of-balance figure in your takings.
